This is an area where residents and visitors enjoy outdoor sports such as hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping, swimming and canoeing.
It is a popular spot for anglers and hunters.
Every year Walleye up to 10 pounds, Northern Pike up to 25 pounds, and Smallmouth Bass up to 6 pounds are caught in the Missinaibi River.
Due its remote location, our area (James Bay Frontier) has some of the best black bear and moose habitats.
The nearby town of Hearst is known worldwide as
"THE MOOSE CAPITAL".
LOCATED IN WMU 24
West of the property about 11 kilometers and next to the Town of Mattice is the Missinabi River.
The Missinaibi River is a river in northern Ontario, Canada, which flows northeast from Missinaibi Lake, north of Chapleau, and empties into the Moose River, which drains into James Bay.
This river is 755 kilometres in length.
The river is very large and noted for it’s fine fishing.
The river is a favourite canoe destination.
Of the 50 sets of rapids studding the Missinaibi River’s 350-mile route, only two absolutely must be portaged.
The rest are fun Class II–III affairs, which is what makes the Missinaibi one of the world’s best canoe trips:
it’s tough to find that many moderate rapids all in one place.
The Municipality of Mattice-Val Côté is an incorporated township in Cochrane District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located approximately 30 kilometres east of Hearst and 70 kilometres west of Kapuskasing on Ontario Highway 11.
Set on the Missinaibi River, Mattice used to be a starting point for Voyageurs heading downstream for the fur trade.
When you enter Mattice from the east, you’ll be greeted by a dinosaur.
The dinosaur has no cultural significance to the town. There isn’t a museum around. He’s not the town mascot. It’s just decoration on someone’s front lawn.
A francophone town in the heart of French-speaking Ontario, Mattice (rhymes with ice) is one of these small northern towns (population approximately 500) on Highway 11 that has a little bar, an a full-blown LCBO, and a skidoo repair shop.
The Carnaval Missinaïbi (winter carnival) is held over the course of two weeks in the end of February/beginning of March every winter.
Activities include snowmobile rallies, music concerts, and kids activities.
